The man was shot after he approached the vehicle the officer was seated in and used a revolver to tap the glass.
The suspect was struck in the mouth by multiple shots fired by the deputy. According to authorities, a second deputy opened fire as well, but missed the man.
It is not thought that Justice Sotomayor’s residence was intentionally targeted.
The 18-year-old defendant, identified as Kentrell Flowers in the court paperwork, is receiving medical attention in a hospital as he is accused of carjacking and possessing guns. The identities of the two deputies remain unknown.
According to court records, Mr. Flowers had exited a silver minivan that had previously been stolen.
According to court filings, the two policemen were sporting T-shirts and polo shirts with the US Marshals logo during the incident.
The adolescent suspect was accused of possessing a large capacity magazine, carrying a firearm without a licence, and armed carjacking. Over ten-round magazines are prohibited in Washington, DC.
Although the police said there was no proof the suspect knew who he had approached or that he was close to Justice Sotomayor’s house, they are still looking into the reported attempted carjacking.
