At Khyber Teaching Hospital, the second-biggest hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, another instance of medical malpractice has surfaced. During a delivery process, a towel was left inside a patient’s tummy.
Zara Bibi, a Chitral resident and nurse at the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC), had a delivery procedure at the Khyber Teaching Hospital on June 26.
According to Akbar Ali, Zara Bibi’s husband, they were released from the hospital after two days and went back to their house.
But Zara Bibi began to feel feverish and with intense stomach discomfort. They were informed by the gynecology ward that this was common following delivery and would go away with medicine.
Zara Bibi’s agony increased on July 1st, so Akbar Ali drove her to the Khyber Teaching Hospital emergency room. Following ultrasounds and X-rays, the gynecology ward once more deemed her clear and sent her home.
They went back to the hospital on July 4th to have her stitches taken out, but the discomfort didn’t go away. They were comforted and let to go back to their village in Chitral despite their worries.
But Zara Bibi’s discomfort persisted, and on July 6 she was transferred from Khyber Teaching Hospital to the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology. Ultrasounds and other tests indicated that she had fluid in her lungs. They were directed to a chest specialist by the KTH gynecological ward after informing them of this.
