This week, President Biden was widely criticized on social media for re-posting and commenting on a message made by Elmo from Sesame Street.
On Monday, the Sesame Street puppet went viral with a post asking his more than 500,000 followers how they were feeling.
“Elmo just wanted to say hello! “Hi everyone, how are you doing?” the account said, garnering about 200 million views and thousands of replies on X, the former name for Twitter, many of them from well-known individuals and institutions like NASA.
The Elmo account responded to the enormous social media commotion the following day by posting a picture of the puppet grinning at his fans while clutching a plush toy and exclaiming, “Wow! Elmo is happy he inquired! Elmo discovered the value of asking a buddy for advice.
As the border surge continues, Texas Governor Abbott asserts that Biden is in violation of federal law.
After seeing Elmo’s widely shared message, Biden’s social media team apparently decided to have the president weigh in with some advice of his own.
“I know how hard it is some days to sweep the clouds away and get to sunnier days,” said Biden on social media. Elmo, our friend, is correct when he says that we must support one another, lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need, and, above all, ask for assistance when we need it. It may be difficult, but you’re never by yourself.”
In less than a day, the president’s message had 22.2 million views and led to jeers from many of his detractors.
Tim Young, a conservative columnist, made the joke, “One puppet supporting another puppet.”
Biden received a reply from Trump associate Roger Stone that read, “Maybe the Democrats would be better off nominating Elmo instead of you?”
