The Liberal Party, led by outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, said late Thursday that it will select a new leader on March 9 in advance of the 2025 elections, in which polls indicate the party is in a very precarious situation.
In response to criticism from legislators concerned by the party’s dismal performance in pre-election surveys, the prime minister declared Monday that he will resign within the next few months after nine years in office.
Trudeau declared that until the party selects a new leader, he would continue to serve as both prime minister and leader of the Liberals.
“After a robust and secure nation-wide process, the Liberal Party of Canada will choose a new leader on March 9, and be ready to fight and win the 2025 election,” the party stated.
