During the Kargil War, Captain Karnal Sher Khan—receiver of the Nishan-e-Haider—led multiple raids, repelling enemy attacks and causing significant casualties.
Khan and fourteen allies were assigned the mission of removing opposition between the Kashif and Wakeel stations on July 5, 1999. They came upon a sizable enemy force moving in the direction of Kashif Post.
Khan and the rest of his men launched a full-scale attack in spite of the difficult circumstances, surprising the enemy and dealing serious damage.
Khan and seven of his allies were struck by enemy sniper fire during this mission, and they accepted martyrdom.
In recognition of Khan’s valor, an Indian Brigade Commander said, “The counterattacks led by Captain Karnal Sher Khan had almost uprooted our troops.”
