Nearly eight years after the rape and murder of a young Irish lady in the Goan tourist state, a 31-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison by an Indian court on Monday.
The victim, whose identity is protected by Indian law, was 28 years old in March 2017 when she traveled to Goa and made friends with Vikat Bhagat, the man found guilty of the crime.
Investigating officer Filomeno Costa told the ANI news agency, in which Reuters holds a minority ownership, that the court had handed down the final sentence today, which was life in prison for the accused.
According to her attorney, Vikas Varma, the body was found in a wooded section of Palolem beach in Goa, with several wounds, including ones on her face.
