John Hopfield, an American physicist, was the most recent expert to caution about the possible risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) if it is not controlled. Hopfield was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for his groundbreaking research on the subject.
Along with fellow winner Geoffrey Hinton, 76, Hopfield, 91, an emeritus professor at Princeton, advocated for a better comprehension of the underlying workings of deep-learning systems to stop them from getting out of control.
Hopfield and Hinton’s concerns follow those of other tech titans, including as Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, who have previously voiced similar concerns and called for laws to regulate technology and its use.
