The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized the 1956-founded organization, which is composed of survivors of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for its efforts to eradicate nuclear weapons from the planet.
According to Joergen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Nobel Committee, the group “contributed greatly to the establishment of the nuclear taboo”.
In addition to commending the group for using witness testimony to assure that nuclear weapons must never be used again, Mr. Frydnes warned that the “nuclear taboo” was now “under pressure”.
According to the Norwegian Nobel Institute, 286 candidates—197 people and 89 organizations—have been nominated for the peace award this year.
Those holding important positions of power, such as members of national assemblies, governments, and international tribunals of law, are eligible to nominate others.
