President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unsuccessful effort to implement martial law has prompted opposition lawmakers in South Korea to start the impeachment process against him.
After a night filled with unusual events, including Yoon’s unexpected declaration of martial law, the gathering of 190 MPs to vote it down, and the abrupt reversal of the decision almost six hours later, the nation awoke to an uncertain reality on Wednesday.
The Democratic Party, the largest opposition party in South Korea, denounced Yoon’s original proclamation of martial law as “insurrectionary behavior” after introducing the impeachment resolution.
Additionally, the Party declared its intention to accuse Yoon of “crimes of rebellion.”
It said it also wanted Interior Minister Lee Sang-min and Minister Kim Yong-hyun indicted alongside Yoon, naming them as “key participants” in the proclamation of martial law.
