In an attempted assassination yesterday, Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times.
Robert Kalinak, the minister of defense, stated that doctors had been “fighting for his life” all night.
The 59-year-old was gathering with supporters at a cultural center in the town of Handlova, about 85 miles northeast of the capital Bratislava, when at least four shots were fired, according to the administration.
Although a 71-year-old suspect is in police custody, it is yet unknown why the shooting occurred.
When Mr. Fico ran for office again last year on a platform that was pro-Russian and anti-American, other members of the EU and NATO began to worry that he might move his nation even further away from the mainstream.
