This reduces the field to three candidates for the role of Rishi Sunak’s replacement: James Cleverly, Kemi Badenoch, and Robert Jenrick.
In today’s vote, Mr. Cleverly defeated Mr. Jenrick, winning the support of 39 of his colleagues.
Mr. Jenrick received 31 votes, followed by Mr. Tugendhat (20) and Ms. Badenoch (30).
The field will be narrowed to the final two candidates by another vote by MPs on Wednesday. Next month, Tory members will vote on these candidates.
In a post on X, Mr. Tugendhat expressed gratitude to his supporters and said, “Your energy, your ideas, and your support have shown a vision of what our party could become.”
Although our campaign is over, our dedication to our nation never ends.
Under Mr. Sunak’s leadership, Mr. Tugendhat held the position of security minister. He also served in the military prior to entering politics, a point he has used to position himself as the candidate for public service.
Viewed as belonging to the party’s moderate, centrist wing, he tied for third place in the final voting round with Mr. Cleverly, the former home secretary, after Mel Stride was eliminated.
