“Shocking” footage of the man plunging into the sea to land on the orca with his body provoked outrage on social media after New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DoC) shared it on its Instagram account.
The guy was fined $600 (£288) for his activities off the coast of Devonport, Auckland, in February, when he targeted an adult male orca and a calf.
People can be heard cheering the man on as he swims toward the orcas in a second attempt to approach them.
At one point in the video, the man exclaims “I touched it” to the other passengers on the boat, seemingly wondering whether they had managed to videotape his activities.
