A representative for the former prime minister acknowledged the meeting had place after The Sunday Times reported he had flown there for “unofficial talks” with Venezuela’s president, a Russian ally.
According to the spokesperson, Mr Johnson met with Venezuelan government officials with the “active support” of Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).
The meeting was held to “emphasise the need for Venezuela to embrace a proper democratic process,” according to the spokeswoman.
“He repeatedly made clear there can be no hope of normalisation in relations until Venezuela fully embraces democracy and respects the territorial integrity of its neighbours,” the statement said.
“He also set out the case for the cause of Ukrainian victory to the government of Venezuela.”
