Following the extension of his imprisonment, hundreds of supporters of South Korea’s imprisoned president, Yoon Suk Yeol, broke into a court building early on Sunday, smashing windows and creating a “unimaginable” onslaught, according to the country’s interim leader.
In response to accusations of rebellion stemming from his abrupt and dramatic declaration of martial law on December 3, which has caused political unrest in the nation, Yoon became the first sitting South Korean president to be jailed on Wednesday.
Around 3 a.m. (1800 GMT) on Sunday, just after the court’s ruling was made public, Yoon’s followers poured into the building, overwhelming riot police who were attempting to contain them.
According to video, protesters destroyed office supplies, fixtures, and furnishings after hurling fire extinguishers into police lines stationed at the front entrance and flooding the interior.
