Seven people were killed and numerous more were wounded when gunmen in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir opened fire on a construction site labor camp, according to Indian media on Monday, which updated an earlier death toll.
One of the bloodiest attacks on people this year occurred on Sunday.
Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of the disputed area, described the attack as “dastardly and cowardly” late on Sunday, while Amit Shah, the interior minister of India, threatened to take “harshest” action against anyone guilty.
Muslim-dominated Since India and Pakistan gained independence from British rule in 1947, Kashmir has been split between them and has been the scene of an ongoing insurgency.
Attackers reportedly targeted foreign laborers who were building a road tunnel connecting controlled Kashmir with the far northern Ladakh region, which borders the Himalayas.
