The state corrections administration had ordered a lockdown of prisons for April 8, the day of the eclipse. As a result, prisoners were not permitted to be outside during regular leisure time and were therefore unable to witness the event.
The six prisoners at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility, who are all from diverse religious backgrounds, responded by suing the New York branch, claiming that the lockdown had violated their right to practice their religions by preventing them from attending an event that was significant to their respective religions.
The celestial event won’t be visible in the US again until 2044; it was last observed there in 2017.
According to the complaint, a solar eclipse is an uncommon occurrence that holds significant religious value for numerous individuals.
