According to the Australian government, new regulations will be developed to compel large internet firms to compensate local news publishers.
The much awaited ruling lays out a replacement for a groundbreaking rule that Australia passed in 2021 with the goal of forcing industry titans like Google and Meta to pay for hosting news on their platforms.
The stalemate with politicians began earlier this year when Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, stated it would not renew payment agreements it had with Australian news organizations.
Businesses that generate more than A$250 million ($160 million; £125 million) in income annually will have to enter into commercial agreements with media organizations under the new regulations, which were unveiled on Thursday, or face higher taxes.
