According to the authorities, a crush at a Christmas funfair in the southwest Nigerian city of Ibadan killed 35 children and injured another 6.
The organizers had indicated that they would provide food and monetary handouts, but there was a crush as people fought to get in.
More than 5,000 kids had gathered at the location, according to locals, and the crush happened when the primary organizers showed up to begin the celebration.
The events leading up to the crush have not been made public.
Eight individuals, including the primary organizer and well-known city resident Naomi Silekunola, have reportedly been taken into custody by the police.
