A statement from the outlawed Fitna-al Khawarij, often known as TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack, which happened near Bannu around 25 miles (40 km) from the Afghan border.
When the raid started, officers were attending a colleague’s funeral who had been slain in a militant attack the day before.
“Suicide vests were worn by four of the militants, but they were neutralized before they could set them off. “The police base has been completely cleared out,” stated Imran Shahid, a top police official in the district.
He said that five insurgents and four police officers had died.
According to district-born provincial minister Pakhtoon Yar Khan, “the five militants, disguised as women wearing burqas, reached the gate of the police [base] before launching their attack.”
