ISLAMABAD Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Thursday threw his support behind the creation of a constitutional court, saying that it should be established if the people of Pakistan were dissatisfied with the current judicial system, despite the uncertainty surrounding the tabling of a contentious “constitutional package” in parliament.
Speaking at the lawyers’ conference in Islamabad, the former foreign minister made this statement after the coalition administration was unable to present the constitutional reforms in parliament due to a lack of a two-thirds majority.
Following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) request last month for the early issuance of the proposed constitution, the government pushed the package of constitutional amendments amid rumors of a possible extension in the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is scheduled to retire in October of this year.
