According to Fenamad, a rights organization that stands up for the rights of the nation’s indigenous people, tensions between loggers and tribes are rising.
Rescue operations are underway for two of the other loggers involved in the attack who went missing and one who was injured, according to Fenamad, an organization that speaks for 39 indigenous communities in the Cusco and Madre de Dios regions of southeast Peru.
The event happened on August 29 in the Pariamanu river valley when loggers were forging new routes through the jungle and encountered the well-known and solitary territorial tribe.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Fenamad said, “The Peruvian state has not taken preventive and protective measures to ensure the lives and integrity of the workers who have been gravely affected.”
According to the group, the attack took place about 15 miles (25 km) from the location of an earlier event in July in which the Mashco Piro attacked loggers as well.
In their statement, Fenamad claimed that despite warning the administration of the possibility of an increase in violence, nothing had been done.
