After defeating the United States in a doubles final, Australia will go to the Davis Cup semifinals and face either Argentina or Italy, the current champions.
After Ben Shelton fell to Thanasi Kokkinakis, world number four Taylor Fritz preserved the USA in the match between the two most successful countries in the tournament’s history by defeating Alex de Minaur.
However, with a straight-set victory against Shelton and Tommy Paul, Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson advanced Australia, runners-up in the previous two editions, to the round of four.
Germany will play the Netherlands in the other semi-final, while Italy, captained by world number one Jannik Sinner, will play Argentina later on Thursday.
In an exciting first match, Kokkinakis won a 30-point third set after saving four match points.
