Brendan Carr, a Republican who has been vocal in his criticism of Big Tech, has been appointed by US President-elect Donald Trump to head the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Trump said in a statement on Sunday that Carr, who has been an FCC commissioner since 2017, will put an end to the “regulatory onslaught” that has slowed down entrepreneurs and job creators and make sure the communications agency serves rural communities.
“Commissioner Carr has fought against regulatory lawfare that has stifled Americans’ freedoms and held back our economy. He is a warrior for free speech,” Trump added.
After the president-elect’s decision, Carr, who has shared Trump’s worries about social media control, reaffirmed the importance of giving free speech top priority.
“The censorship cartel must be destroyed, and free speech must be reinstated.”
