One day after President Daniel Noboa proclaimed a state of emergency, explosions have occurred in many locations, and at least four police officers have been kidnapped in Ecuador, according to police reports. Noboa, a former lawmaker and the son of one of the wealthiest men in the nation, came to office in November with pledges to turn around the faltering economy and stop the years-long surge of violence that has been occurring in jails and on the streets. On Monday, Noboa issued a 60-day state of emergency, utilizing a tactic his predecessor had not been very successful with. This allowed military patrols, even ones inside jails, and established a nationwide curfew for the night. The action was a reaction to the abduction of Adolfo Macias, the gang leader of Los Choneros, from the jail where he was incarcerated.
