Although the 40-year-old Selby, a four-time world champion, won the Championship League in March, his performance this season has been patchy.
“I fought, but it was awful. That’s definitely it for me if I keep playing like that,” Selby remarked.
In October, he competed in his only ranking final at the British Open.
“I’ve always said if it gets to a point where I stop enjoying it and it doesn’t matter whether I am number one in the world or 128, I won’t carry on playing,” Selby, who was born in Leicester, said.
I am working hard, but it really feels useless if you are working hard for performances like that.
Throughout his career, Selby has suffered well-documented mental health concerns. He has also recently opened up about other personal struggles that are unrelated to snooker, such the death of a family friend from cancer, which his wife Vikki also battled.
