Pakistan has appealed to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the “recurring” cases of nuclear and other hazardous material theft and unlawful sale in India, its neighbor.
According to a recent allegation in the Indian media, three smugglers carrying a rare, highly radioactive Californianium stone—which commands a high price on the international market—were apprehended by police in Bihar’s western Gopalganj area.
A committee set up by the 15-member Council in response to its resolution 1540, which mandates that UN member states take particular actions, heard testimony from Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram. “The Security Council should be deeply concerned at the recurring incidents of theft and illicit sale of nuclear and other radioactive materials in our eastern neighbor.”
