The Los Angeles Dodgers player, who has often kept his personal life private, saw one million likes on his post in less than an hour.
“I wanted to let everyone know that I got married,” the 29-year-old posted on Instagram on Thursday.
“Who is very special to me” is how Ohtani put his Japanese wife. He didn’t provide any more information.
In the tweet, he stated, “Two people (plus one dog), we’ll grow together,” and announced that he will be holding a news conference on Friday.
Before Ohtani announced his marriage on Instagram, not much was known about his romantic state.
Ohtani inked a $700 million (£552 million) ten-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.
Ohtani is equally adept at both pitching and batting, in contrast to most athletes who specialize in one or the other.
