Are you consuming mind-numbing stuff and scrolling through social media applications nonstop? Perhaps you have “brain rot”—the Oxford word of the year for 2024—if the answer is yes.
From a shortlist of six words compiled by Oxford University Press, the term was selected by over 37,000 individuals in a public vote.
“The supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging” is the definition of brain rot.
Oxford University Press claims that the phrase “brain rot” became more popular this year to characterize the negative effects of consuming “excessive amounts of low-quality online content,” particularly on social media.
