Sarah started taking time off work to travel hundreds of miles from her Nashville home to a facility in North Carolina that could treat her transgender son after Tennessee outlawed gender-affirming care for transgender youngsters last year.
However, a month later, a similar prohibition was implemented in North Carolina, which sent Sarah into a panic when she discovered that Ohio was the nearest state to transfer her son—more than 400 miles away. She was relieved to learn that children who were already undergoing therapy were exempt from the North Carolina law.
“Instead of having to make a 12-hour journey, I should be able to go five minutes down the road and have my child taken care of and medication easily received,” Sarah said.
