ISLAMABAD: The federal government has proposed changes to the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca) in the National Assembly, which would reduce the penalty for “intentionally disseminating false and fake information” from seven years in prison to three years.
New definitions, the creation of regulatory and investigative agencies, and harsher sanctions for spreading “false” information are among the suggested amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025, according to the document that Geo News has access to.
According to reports last month, the government was considering amending the nation’s cybercrime laws, which now impose a five-year jail sentence or a Rs. 1 million fine on anyone found guilty of purposefully disseminating false information.
