A World War II veteran who enlisted prior to receiving his high school diploma was followed by his great-granddaughter in a well-earned graduation ceremony on Saturday.
With the help of the Operation Recognition Program, Charles Bird, 99, of West Virginia, graduated from Clay County High School. This program, which is administered by the West Virginia Board of Education and the West Virginia Veterans’ Council, allows troops who valiantly served in World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War to obtain their high school diploma.
Bird was photographed beaming in a cap and gown at the wedding, while his great-granddaughter, Ashdon Salisbury, was dressed similarly.
Donna Salisbury, Bird’s daughter, told the News that her father still has an exceptional and vivid recall.
