In a case that provoked protests and indignation across the country, an Indian court sentenced a man to life in jail for the rape and murder of a junior physician.
Sanjay Roy, a hospital volunteer in Kolkata who was found guilty over the weekend, will serve the remainder of his life in prison, the judge said, rejecting calls for the death penalty.
Roy has insisted on his innocence and is anticipated to file an appeal with a higher court.
The victim’s relatives stated they were “shocked” by the sentence and wanted him to be hanged.
“We won’t let investigations end, and we’ll keep fighting… We will fight for justice no matter what,” the woman’s father told the AFP news agency.
