On Sunday, the 26th draft of the constitutional amendment was ultimately accepted by the federal cabinet. If adopted, it will bring about judicial reforms in Pakistan, including an extension of the chief justice’s tenure.
The long-awaited endorsement indicates that the ruling alliance has secured enough votes for the constitutional amendment to pass. Of the 336 members, the government requires 224 votes.
The Senate was to gather at 3 p.m. and it would soon be brought up for discussion.
“After the development, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated the JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and thanked him for his support,” he said to media.
Many legal experts had voiced worries about the proposal, but he insisted, “There is nothing controversial in the bill.”
