Just one day prior to the incident, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that he had received some guarantees from the US government that Israel would lessen its strikes in the capital.
Separately, it was revealed on Wednesday that Israeli attacks had killed five individuals, including the mayor of the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon.
While Lebanon’s health ministry stated that the attack had struck a municipal facility, the governor of Nabatieh province verified the mayor’s death.
The Israeli military claimed to have destroyed “underground infrastructure” and hit scores of Hezbollah targets in the Nabatieh region.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in Beirut had issued a warning to residents of Dahieh, a bustling residential and commercial district in the capital’s southern suburbs, that the region would be targeted.
The IDF stated in a statement that it had been aiming for a weapons storage facility.
Reporters from the Associated Press reported three hits in the area, the first about an hour after the warning.
