In January, the prime minister stated to reporters that he bases his “working assumption” on the idea that elections will take place “the second half of this year”.
He did not, however, completely rule out a May election, which led to rumors that he was holding that option under wraps.
If the spring budget, which was unveiled on Wednesday, included enough giveaways, several pundits suggested Mr. Sunak may go to the polls early. However, the absence of any drastic measures dampened such discussion.
On Thursday, Mr. Sunak further cooled off calls for a May election.
Mr. Sunak responded to a question from news Local Radio in Yorkshire regarding the election’s date by saying, “I was very clear about this at the beginning of the year about my working assumption for the election being in the second half of the year – nothing has changed since then.”
