Rescue attempts are ongoing for twelve miners who are still trapped within a collapsed coal mine in the Sanjadi region of Balochistan, around 40 kilometers from Quetta.
Following a gas explosion last night, the mine collapsed, trapping the miners at a depth of 4,200 feet under debris.
The rescue effort is being carried out by teams from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the local government, and the Levies. According to the PDMA deputy director rescue, debris has collected to a depth of 20 to 30 feet and is being removed using heavy machinery.
However, progress has been hindered by the mine’s noxious fumes and the piled debris; two PDMA personnel fainted during the operation. Despite major challenges, efforts are still being made to save the miners.
