ISLAMABAD: Journalists’ organizations have criticized the National Assembly’s unanimous approval of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025, which amends the current legislation.
Arshad Ansari, secretary general of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), told Geo News that journalists will contest the changes in court and that they would boycott assembly sessions and stage protests.
Since the opposition parties had already staged a walkout, the bill was adopted just minutes after it was introduced by Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain.
The “Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025” draft calls for the creation of regulatory and investigative agencies, new definitions, and harsher sanctions for spreading “false” information.
