The Constitutional Court announced it will give suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol a speedy trial, while South Korea’s parliament impeached interim President Han Duck-soo on Friday for imposing a brief martial law, further destabilizing the nation.
South Korea’s once-vibrant democratic success story has entered a new phase with the impeachment of Han, who has been acting president since Yoon was impeached on December 14 for imposing martial law on December 3.
Opposition parties’ motion was approved with 192 of the 300 votes, but not before supporters of the ruling People Power Party surrounded the speaker’s podium and chanted that the vote was void and that parliament had engaged in “tyranny.”
