HAVANA: According to the government, the largest power plant in Cuba failed early on Wednesday morning, causing the country’s electrical system to collapse. This is the most recent of multiple breakdowns as the island’s grid becomes chaotic due to fuel shortages, natural disasters, and economic difficulties.
The main electrical producer on the island, the Antonio Guiteras power plant in Matanzas, broke down at around two in the morning, causing the grid to fail, according to the country’s ministry of mines and energy.
This year, when oil shipments from Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico decreased, Cuba’s oil-fired power plants—which were already outdated and had difficulty keeping the lights on—reached a full crisis, leading to several national blackouts over a two-month period.
Havana, the capital, was nearly entirely without power due to a system failure that occurred Wednesday morning.
