Taking advantage of a day off following the Supreme Court’s decision in the reserved seats case earlier today (Friday), the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is predicted to become the largest party in the National Assembly with 109 members, led by Imran Khan.
A stunning legal win for the nation’s leading opposition party came when the country’s highest court decided that Imran Khan’s party should be allotted reserved seats.
The ruling has not only made it possible for the PTI, which was disqualified from the polls on February 8 due to the ECP’s December 2023 ruling, to rejoin parliament, but it has also put more pressure on the coalition partnership by altering the makeup of the National Assembly.
The ruling coalition led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will continue to hold the simple majority with 209 members due to the PTI’s majority of seats in the lower chamber of the legislature. There are 108 members in the PML-N altogether.
After the PTI gets 23 reserved seats, the opposition alliance in the National Assembly will grow to 120 members. There are currently 97 members of the opposition as a whole, which includes the PTI. With two independents, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Omar Ayub Khan, and 84 members who support the Suni Ittehad Council (SIC), the PTI currently has 86 members in the lower chamber.
