Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan issued a reserved verdict on the petition on Friday. The federal government lawyer had contested the motions for a five-year disqualification for a politician.
The petitioner claimed that parliament modified the law to shorten the disqualification period to five years. According to the laws, the legislation of lifetime disqualification cannot be altered by parliament through specific members, he stressed.
The petitioner also sought to declare invalid and void the law that reduced the lifelong disqualification period to five years.
Lifetime disqualification case
On January 8, the Supreme Court, in a decision involving the interpretation of Article 62(1)(f), repealed lawmakers’ lifetime exclusion from parliament.
