Tim Davie stated in an interview with Sarah-Jane Mee on The UK Tonight: “I think that would be the wrong decision for society and our identity. If you are only dealing with a commercial market, then there are more significant factors involved.
Although Mr. Davie acknowledged that reforming license fees was necessary, he clarified, saying, “My goal is not to just raise license fees. That is not my responsibility. My responsibility is to ensure that every household receives good value for their money. Since almost all adults now watch the news once a month, we believe we are providing good value.”
The license fee was set at £159 for two years due to a shortage of money, but in 2023 the government declared that it will raise the household charge to £169.50 per year starting in April by using a lower rate of inflation.
In an effort to save £500 million, the broadcaster has had to reevaluate its priorities in light of the freeze and growing inflation, as Mr. Davie revealed.
