The Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced that legislation has been laid out in parliament to implement the ban starting on June 1st of next year.
Companies will have until the deadline “to prepare for the ban coming into force and sell any remaining stock they hold,” according to the statement.
The department also stated that the ban would “align coming into force dates” after the UK government and devolved governments collaborated closely on it.
Single-use vapes are “extremely wasteful and blight our towns and cities,” according to circular economy minister Mary Creagh.
As we put an end to this country’s disposable mentality, that is why we are outlawing single-use vapes, she said.
This is the beginning of a circular economy, which will minimize waste, use resources for longer periods of time, speed up the transition to net zero, and generate thousands of employment nationwide.
In the UK, it was projected that about five million single-use vapes were discarded in general rubbish or left lying around every week last year. This is nearly four times the amount that was disposed of the year before.
According to DEFRA, the number of vapers in England increased by over 400% between 2012 and 2023. According to the report, 9.1% of Brits currently purchase and utilize them.
