Declaring 2025 the “Year of 5G,” the government unveiled a bold ambition to increase Fibre-To-The-Site (FTTS) penetration to 60% and reach an average broadband speed of 50/100 Mbps.
Amer Shahzad, the Director General of Licensing, made this revelation at the National Broadband Network Forum 2024, which was hosted by Huawei and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
According to Shahzad, the country will likely reach a major milestone when the 5G spectrum auction is held in April 2025. The government wants to raise the Fixed Broadband (FBB) penetration rate to 20% in the next five years, however it is currently less than 2%.
The objective is to increase the average broadband speed, which is now at about 15 Mbps.
