According to representatives of the local fire service, no one was hurt when a piece of the Carola Bridge in Dresden collapsed into the Elbe River.
There are worries that more of the structure may fall in the next several hours.
Travelers have experienced severe delays as a result of the bridge’s collapse, which is a major thoroughfare in the area.
The city’s heating system has also been affected by the tragedy.
German news agency reports that police are considering the fall as an accident and that there are no indications of foul play.
Officials stated that since the bridge was built during the communist era in East Germany, it’s probable that chlorine corrosion.
The city’s tram system, as well as vehicles, walkers, and cyclists that use the bridge to cross between Dresden’s Old Town and New Town, were all affected by the emergency closing of the whole span.
Boat transportation was also stopped, which affected both cargo ships and sightseeing boats for tourists.
The last tram to pass the crossing was only 18 minutes before it collapsed, according to news; thus, crews were notified soon after three in the morning.
