At the inaugural live performance of News’ Electoral Dysfunction tour in London, the former cabinet minister talked about how he was called into the prime minister’s office thirty minutes ahead of the rest of the cabinet to deliver the news.
Telling the tale to Conservative peer Ruth Davidson, Labour peer Harriet Harman, and News’ political reporter Beth Rigby, Mr. Gove stated: “There were growing rumors the previous day that a number of meetings had been canceled.
“I found it hard to accept that it would be because a general election was about to be called. There were hints that even another reorganization was possible.
But when I received a call at lunchtime asking me to come in to see Rishi at 3.45 pm ahead of the cabinet meeting at 4.15 pm, I knew—not for sure, but for 99 percent sure.
I therefore realized that, if he desired to meet me, the rumors that had been gaining momentum all day were most likely accurate.
