According to the South Korean military spokeswoman, North Korean troops were seen repairing the roadways, with plans to detonate as early as Monday.
South Korean joint chiefs of staff spokeswoman Lee Sung Joon told a conference, “They have put screens on the road and are working behind those screens, preparing to blow up the roads.”
In keeping with Kim Jong Un’s efforts to sever relations with South Korea and officially establish it as the North’s main adversary, the highways will be destroyed.
It follows accusations from the North that the South has dropped propaganda leaflets using drones over its capital three times this month.
The military said it had placed eight armed artillery units at the border “on standby to open fire” and warned of a “horrible disaster” if the drones were found again.
Because the combined US and South Korean forces are stronger than the North’s military, experts say it is extremely improbable that the North will launch full-scale, preemptive attacks.
