To celebrate the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorship, thousands of Syrians flocked to the streets of Damascus and other towns.
Before the joyous demonstrations organized by the Islamist rebels who spearheaded the military rebellion against Assad, people in Damascus assembled for prayers at the famous Umayyad Mosque.
In order to commemorate “the victory of the blessed revolution,” rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, who has since adopted his true name, Ahmed al-Sharaa, had called on Syrians “to go to the streets to express their joy” on Friday.
As the government his father established fifty years ago fell apart in a matter of turbulent days, Assad fled to Russia on Sunday.
