Donald Trump seems to have greater faith in the British military’s capabilities than some of his own generals, or even many of the country’s former senior military officials.
During his press conference with the prime minister of the United Kingdom, Trump responded to a question concerning US security assurances for Ukraine by saying, “The British have incredible soldiers, incredible military, and they can take care of themselves.”
The US president did, however, leave open the question of whether the UK military could defeat Russia.
Senior U.S. military leaders are quick to commend Britain’s armed forces in public for their professionalism. In private, however, they frequently express harsh disapproval of recent reductions in their numbers, particularly with regard to the British Army.
